Sophie's Story

Last week we shared Sophie's Story with you. She spoke about how thankful she was for the help she received at the WCA and her confidence that she and her children would "never see abuse again."
Sophie's success is a reminder to all of us that a healthy, hopeful future is possible for survivors of abuse and their children. Violence doesn't have to be passed down from generation to generation. We can break the cycle.
But we can only do it with your help.
There are thousands of families like Sophie's here in the Treasure Valley who need the WCA to find safety and healing. We can only help with your support.

It costs: $26 to help a victim file a protection order $52 to provide 5 hours of crisis hotline coverage $95 for one safe night of shelter for a family $275 for a month of counseling for a woman or child

Please give the gift of hope this holiday.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation

Twenty years ago Elizabeth Glaser set out to change the world -- to save her son's life after her daughter died and to make sure that every child with HIV/AIDS had a chance for a healthy life. Two years later, Barbara Easterling and the Communications Workers of America heard her powerful voice at the annual convention, and there began a great partnership that is alive today. While Barbara retired in 2008 after a distinguished term of service, the Foundation was pleased to welcome Annie Hill, CWA's new Executive Vice President, as her replacement on our Board of Directors.

To say that the Foundation has come a long way since then is an understatement. We also are now working in more than 3,200 sites in 18 countries around the world. In a day and age when the word "global" has taken on a whole new meaning, the support of CWA has been crucial in the Foundation's efforts to create a generation free of HIV.

In the past year, YOU have helped us accomplish the seemingly impossible. Here are a few of the wonderful successes the Foundation has achieved with CWA’s support:

• As of June 30, 2008, the Foundation has reached more than 5.7 million women with prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV services.

• More than 4.8 million women have been tested for HIV through Foundation-supported programs, and more than 470,000 individuals, including more than 39,000 children, have been enrolled in our HIV care and support programs.

• Last year, 28 percent of ALL HIV-positive pregnant women worldwide who received PMTCT services did so through Foundation-supported programs. That’s more than one in four women who have been helped directly by us . . . and directly by you.

• On July 30, 2008, the former President signed into law the reauthorization for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program. As a result, $48 billion in funding was approved for global HIV/AIDS programs over the next five years. The Foundation successfully lobbied Congress to include important PMTCT and pediatric treatment provisions in this landmark legislation.

In the past four years, CWA locals have generously donated $1.5 million. We appreciate all that you have done for the Foundation and look forward to working with you as you continue to support the Foundation's important and groundbreaking work. In 2009 the Foundation will celebrate its 20th anniversary and we are, more than ever, thankful for Barbara's stewardship, CWA's belief in our work, and your unwavering support of our mission to one day eradicate pediatric AIDS. As a show of our gratitude and commitment to energizing CWA’s member base, Annie Hill will be rolling out exciting new features of our partnership, including:

• Frequent newsletters highlighting the latest in Foundation news;
• A quarterly spotlight of a CWA local on the Foundation’s homepage;
• An annual "town hall" conference call where CWA members can interact directly with senior members of the Foundation's staff; and,
• An organization-wide list serve where members can exchange ideas for fundraisers and get timely feedback directly from a Foundation liaison.

The opportunity for the world to finally see a generation free of HIV is closer than we think . . . but we won't get there without the Communications Workers of America. We hope you will continue to invest in us so that we can allow more children to live their lives untouched by HIV/AIDS. Please also click on the embedded video to hear a special message from our Family Ambassadors. So, from our family to yours and on behalf of all the women, children, and families, you have helped, thank you for all that you have done, and thank you for all that you will continue to do.

ON THURSDAY... WEAR RED

It has been a custom since 1989 for the members of the CWA to show their solidarity by wearing red on Thursdays, but why and where did this day of red begin?
